Space Air Humidifiers – Common FAQs for First Time Buyers

Space Air Humidifiers

Where Air Humidifier Should Be Placed in a Room?

When you position your humidifier in a room, remember that the area closest to your humidifier will be affected the most. Ensure that it is placed at least 1 foot away from all walls, furniture, curtains, and electrical appliances and ensure the mist nozzle is pointing towards the center of the room to avoid any water damage.

We recommend elevating ultrasonic humidifiers at least 2 feet off the ground on a desktop or nightstand with a water-resistant tray underneath your unit. This height gives the mist from the humidifier enough time to evaporate in the air before it reaches the ground. If you are using an evaporative humidifier, you can place it on the floor, but we also recommend using a water-resistant tray underneath just in case of a spillage.

Do not place your humidifier on or close to wooden surfaces or carpet where water damage could occur without protection. Always use a flat surface to keep the humidifier level and avoid any heated or warm surfaces such as on top of a furnace.

Is It Safe to Leave a Humidifier on All Night?

It is safe to sleep with a humidifier on all night provided you keep the humidifier clean, and you don’t over-humidify the room.

To avoid any health issues, change the water before each use and wipe down the inside of your humidifier regularly. Cleaning your humidifier should be done ideally twice a week with a mixture of white vinegar and water.

Also be wary of white dust, which is a buildup of mineral deposits from tap water that is left behind when the mist from an ultrasonic humidifier settles on surfaces. To prevent white dust, use distilled water that does not contain any mineral content.

The National Sleep Foundation suggests that the ideal humidity level in your bedroom is between 30% to 50%. Remember to monitor the humidity with a hygrometer and maintain an appropriate humidity level. We recommend using an ultrasonic humidifier with a built-in humidistat. The humidistat will shut the unit off when the desired humidity level is reached to prevent any chance of over-humidification.

Does a Humidifier Help Congestion and a Cough?

If the air in your home is overly dry, a humidifier can help alleviate coughing and sinus congestion by adding moisture to the air. The increase in moisture can loosen the mucus and open your air passageways.

Remember to keep the humidifier clean. Otherwise, bacteria and mold can grow in the tank and be released into the room through the mist, potentially causing health problems ranging from flu-like symptoms to serious infection.

What Kind of Water Do You Put in a Humidifier?

If you have an ultrasonic humidifier, using distilled or demineralized water instead of tap water eliminates the risk of white dust from the unit being spread into the air and breathed into your lungs.

If you have an evaporative humidifier, the type of water you use in your unit will depend on where you live. Tap water will suffice for many owners. However, if your tap water is particularly hard, it is better to use filtered water to prolong the lifespan of your wick filter.
